If you love a good pie, and you frequent (or live in) the hinterland, chances are you have come across The Maleny Pie Guy. With his recent ‘grand opening’ in Maleny, opposite the town’s IGA, we had to chat with the man behind the scrumptious pies, Jamie Hodges and find out his plans for world pie domination…

“The very first pie I made was back in 2004 for a farm shop in the UK,” shared Jamie. “It was Steak and Hampshire Ale. I entered it into a competition and I won gold. I knew then and there that this is what I wanted to do.”

Fast forward 15 years, a dozen more awards and thousands of pies, pasties and sausage rolls later and Jamie has finally opened The Maleny Pie Guy headquarters on Maple Street in Maleny, trading seven days a week. 

“I have the full range on offer of the regulars plus a rotating speciality range including the Buffalo and Bourbon Pie or Steak and Brouhaha Pale Ale, or the Satay Veg with Tofu Vegan Pasty.

“I source the best local ingredients the Sunshine Coast has to offer (Maleny Black Angus Grass Fed Beef, Elgin Valley free-range chicken, Kenilworth Dairies cheeses, Maleny Dairies and Brouhaha Brewery) to put in my pies along with real roasted bone broths, that I simmer overnight, to base the gravies on. 

“I recently installed a coffee machine, to pump out Maleny Coffee, to compliment my range of cakes and sweet slices, some of which are gluten, dairy and/or egg free.”

Since late 2013  Jamie started the ‘homemade t sauce by donation’ campaign to raise funds for the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge. A donation gets a squirt of homemade tomato sauce.

“I’ve collected over $5000 worth of tomato sauce donations! And counting.”

Jamie’s current stockists include the Maple Street Co-op, Maleny Dairies and IGA Maleny amongst others. 

“I’m a regular stall holder at the Crystal Waters Market, Montville Market and Witta Market. Plus I attend a few local events and festivals throughout the year, the Wood Expo, Muscle on the Mountain and the Kenilworth Food Festival.

“Once I get my new shop running like a smooth, bone broth-infused pie gravy, I hope to open another down the coast and then Brisbane!” 

It sounds like world pie domination isn’t too far away…
