Australia Day signals that the end of the school holidays are upon us – it’s hot, the kids are restless and are all looking for something to do…right? If you’d love it if there was some good old-fashioned outdoor family fun, then come on down to the free entry Aussie Day Expo at the Maleny Showgrounds on Sunday January 26.
The morning kicks off early with Apex’s famous Big Aussie Day Breakfast, then the Dave Hankinson Oval is transformed into a hive of activity from 8.30 – 11am, as Maleny’s many sporting and community groups share what they can do with you and your family. And it’s all hands-on fun and have-a-go! Sack races, mini obstacle course with mini water pool to cool them down, gumboot throwing, and the hilarious Thong Relay Race.
There are demos and info from up to 60 groups, offering kids the chance to throw a netball, run a few croquet hoops, practise your golf swing, play table tennis, free face-painting, see the firies – and watch the exciting Sylph Circus, Maleny’s young circus group, fly high on their trapeze!
Ever wondered how to contact any of the community and sporting groups that offer local recreational activities for your family? They will all be there and invite you to chat with them whilst the kids are racing around.
They’ll all be in one spot in one morning, with their contact details at the ready to pop into your free Expo Bags. Many of us have some spare hours to volunteer, but the thought of finding the right group to join is often a quandary with so many to choose from – the Expo is a great chance to give them a good checking out!
There’s music too, with the Pioneer Ukulele Group strumming their stuff, a perfect Australia Day accompaniment. Those very sociable macaws from Maleny Birdworld will be there, revelling having a selfie with you, they just can’t wait!
Pick up your free Expo Passport at the Lions entry tent on the way in, then collect a stamp from every display to be in the draw to win fantastic, generous prize vouchers to spend in local businesses and tourism spots – Maleny Dairies, Botanical Gardens, groceries from IGA, vouchers from Above and Beyond Travel, sunglasses from Maleny Optical, and more – very useful after the Christmas splurge.
One last fun morning out together, the perfect end to the school holidays – what are you waiting for?
