Run for the hills!
It’s Cross Country time at the Maleny Community Precinct. The annual Sunshine Coast event, hosted by Maleny Golf Club and MDSRC, comes to Maleny on Sunday May 12. And then follows the more serious Queensland Championships on Sunday July 28.
Races kick-off at 8am with the 10km open for males and females; and wrap up at 9.50am with under 8s 500m for boys and girls. The program is all done and dusted by 10am.
Organisers, Maroochy Athletics Club, expect around 300 keen competitors, ranging from hopeful juniors to dogged seniors with lingering memories of past glories; and who might now be expected to know better. It’s a fun family way to start Mothers’ Day.
Maleny folk should be proud our Precinct is regarded amongst the finest cross country courses in Australia. Reasons for these accolades are compelling. The various routes, ranging from 500m to 10km, across rolling, largely manicured slopes and flats, provide a safe, and rewarding challenge for all skill levels.
Hinterland weather conditions are generally favourable. Rarely elsewhere, spectators, and anxious parents, can view the whole event. The golfers happily surrender their fairways and roughs to share this wonderful community asset with the wider community.
Ample free on-site parking will be managed by friendly Rotary volunteers. Coffee and refreshments are available. Everyone is welcome to come along and share the energy with runners and onlookers.
