Julia Peddie and Marg McKenzie from CHASM (Compassionate Housing Affordability Solutions Maleny) are thrilled to receive a generous donation of $500 from the Blackall Range Zonta Club towards the Small House Project.
Margie Richter from Zonta says, “I’m totally absorbed by CHASM’s ethic and the members’ enormous commitments and values.”
Operating under the auspices of the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, the affordable housing group have been fundraising for homelessness since 2016. They are now raising money to build their first community-owned home in Maleny.
CHASM were Sunshine Coast Council grant recipients last year which helped develop their fundraising and sponsorship strategy. Cr Jenny McKay has also contributed to the development of sponsorship materials and soon to launched website.
Anglicare Australia’s recent Rental Affordability Snapshot found that 94% of private rentals in Australia are unaffordable for people on income support and 72% are unaffordable for people on the minimum wage.
Julia says, “We are convinced that the community must drive affordable housing solutions rather than rely on government.”
