Maleny IDAHO Group members Heather Cameron and Jared Ashcroft
Over the past few years there has been much discussion about the prevention of harassment and bullying of young people in relation to their sexuality. The experience and/or fear of discrimination are key risk factors contributing to higher rates of depression and anxiety among LGBTI populations. LGBTI people are also at greater risk of suicide and self-harm.
A Maleny-based Ally Network, operating in cooperation with the Neighbourhood Centre, is being established to support young people. A free workshop is being held for key people to become better informed about LGBTI issues, and who may potentially become Allies, although this is not a condition of participating in the workshop.
Ex-Maleny High student, Jared Ashcroft (pictured with Heather Cameron), stated, “If this support had been available when I was at school my life would have been so much easier.”
The workshop is being held at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on Saturday October 21, between 10am – 2pm.
