THE HIGHLY successful series of literary conversations in Maleny called Outspoken continues in August when the ABC’s Ramona Koval is in conversation with local author, Steven Lang.

Ramona was with the ABC for more than twenty years when in 2006 she started hosting The Bookshow on Radio National. It was then the only daily radio program devoted to books in the world. Ramona has earned the reputation of being one of the world’s finest literary interviewers. She left the ABC in 2011 and has recently completed a collection of essays on reading entitled, By the Book. She will talk to Steven Lang about what compelled her to write, about talking to writers and about literature itself.

Ramona says of By the Book, which will be published later this year:

“I noticed that there were some books that managed to survive my treatment of close reading, note-taking in margins, and on the end papers, and after the interviews being offered to colleagues, charities or friends. These made it back to my bookshelves at home. So, inspecting my shelves I realise that certain types of books stand together and it’s these collections which serve as the basis of a group of essays I’ve been writing on the subject of reading.”

Ramona Koval, Outspoken with Steven Lang at 6pm on Wednesday August 15 at the Maleny High School’s “Waroo” Hall. Tickets: Maleny Bookshop – $12 /$8 students Ph: 5494 3666. Bookings essential.

PATRICK GALE, the best selling author of Notes from an Exhibition follows Ramona Koval in the Outspoken chair on Wednesday September 5. While working on his first novels in the 80s Patrick eked out his slender income with odd jobs; as a typist, a singing waiter, a designer’s secretary, a ghost-writer for an encyclopedia of the musical and, increasingly, as a book reviewer.

Hismostrecentnovelis APerfectlyGoodMan.‘Gale,’ the Guardian writes, ‘is an effortlessly elastic storyteller, a writer with heart, soul, and a dark and naughty wit, one whose company you relish and trust. In fact you feel you would believe anything he told you…’ his protagonist in this novel is, ‘that rare thing – a fictional character so charismatically ambiguous, so physically, spiritually and emotionally alive, that you feel you could reach out and ruffle his hair.’

Outspoken is an initiative of Maleny Community Centre and Steven Lang and Chris

Francis.
