Two girls, originally from Nambour were in the team that won the Women’s 100 metre Freestyle relay at the London Olympics. Despite her inexperience, coaches selected 18 year-old Brittanie Elmslie for the team along with Melanie Schlanger, who were both born in Nambour.

“The whole family deserve this [the gold medal] as much as me,” said Elmslie, 25 year-old Melanie Schlanger, did a sensational job holding off the fastest woman in the world, Dutchwoman Ranomi Kromowidjojo, over the final 100m, was not even swimming 18 months ago. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson congratulated the two Sunshine Coast swimmers and added, “I hope their medals are the first of many for them and the region, with the Sunshine Coast having connections to a dozen Olympic athletes at the Games.”
