and help Maleny Film Society celebrate its 21st birthday

IT WAS way back in 1990 when an enterprising Maleny resident Joan Rodgers suggested setting up a film society for locals. Joan’s view was that there were many unseen local films as well as a host of international movies that were unavailable to the average movie-goer.

So, with a loyal band of volunteers, the Maleny Film Society was born. After six months of monthly bookings, a regular fortnightly booking was made with the Maleny Community Centre, and money was raised for a rudimentary film projector, speaker system and screen.

For 21 years the Maleny Film Society has presented films from all over the world including Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

It’s annual Film Festival has presented rare Australian films and hosted renowned Australian film directors, producers and actors.

What is special about the fortnightly film nights is the preparation of a tasty evening meal by some of our leading caterers including Pomodoras restaurant, and a glass of wine with friends before the movie.

Comments from Australian and overseas visitors often confirm that the Maleny Film Society nights are a wonderfully unique community cultural experience.

Renovation of the Maleny Community Centre during 2012 will see better facilities for the future growth of the Maleny Film Society.
