Council Boost for Maleny Art Awards

Bob Taylor, president of the Maleny Art Awards and Exhibition had good reason to have a smile on his face recently (see photo). Bob had met with Councillor Jenny Mackay at Maleny’s UpFront Club to receive a $1000 Council cheque to help stage the 2009 event. The annual Maleny Art Awards has become one of the most prestigious art exhibitions on the Sunshine Coast.

The scope, quality and professionalism of the awards has improved each year and in their fifteenth year the judge thought she was coming to a small country Awards only to be astonished by the remarkably high standard of the entries.

The Maleny Art Awards and Exhibition is held over the Queen’s Birthday weekend each year, and in 2008 just under 2000 visitors passed through the door.

Bob Taylor was delighted with the result:

“We hung 430 paintings from 242 artists and sold a total of 58 paintings”, he said.”Our total prize money was $12,650, with $9,000 of this amount provided by private and business sponsors”.

The prize money is spread over nine sections with a total of 23 prizes, so it is possible for 23 artists to share in the prize pool. There is an overall winning entry who this year received $3,000.
