THE MONTH’S main features were warmer overnight temperatures and below average rainfall. High pressure systems covering the whole of Australia, and a series of northwest cloudbands were responsible for our weather pattern, bringing plenty of cloud cover to reduce the amount of Bright Sunshine Hours. A deep low in the Tasman Sea developed early in the month bringing inclement weather to Victoria and NSW, and dry warm winds to southeast Queensland. The month’s total rainfall was 34mm, well below the June average of 108mm.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology a La Niña event is now ‘more likely than not’ to occur this year. The main feature of a La Niña is a broad region of colder than average water centred along the eastern equatorial Pacific. This often results in a wetter than average Winter/Spring for the Sunshine Coast, especially if the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) remains positive, currently around +6.
