The 40 finalists in the national 2010 Sunshine Coast Art Prize have been chosen and the startling revelation is that the Hinterland is a hotbed of creative talent – five of the forty national finalists live and work on the Blackall Range. The winner will be announced on August 26 by this year’s judge, national art critic and writer, John McDonald. The Hinterland Times proudly and exclusively, presents our region’s five artists with their SCAP entry.

MILES HALL
of Maleny with Splice (Pine Lime) 120cm x 100cm oil on aluminium

Miles has been an art, design and painting teacher in Krakow, Poland, Oxford, UK, Brisbane and Sydney. His works are in private collections in the US, France, Poland, Europe and Australia. Miles has studied life drawing and painting under another Hinterland artist, David Paulson.

CEZARY STULGIS
of Maleny with Animal Within 1m x 1.5m Materials: Acrylic on canvas

The body of work builds upon his previous studies of the animal form in which he used dogs as a metaphor for human behaviour. He regularly revisits this cultural marginalisation of animals and tries to question similarities between human and animal behavior – almost a human nostalgia for the wild.

REX BACKHAUS-SMITH
of Montville with Rear Vision 112cm – 150cm Acrylic on canvas

Rex has always been intrigued by what he sees in a car’s rear vision mirror. This painting was conceived in outback western Queensland. It replicates old strips of colour film which repeat the theme of the subtle image changes seen in the rear vision mirror.

KEVIN OXLEY
of Montville with Life Fractals. 125cm x 150cm Collaged digital images. Acrylic paint and UV coating on stretched canvas

This artwork is a summary of the past four years dealing with holding an incurable cancer at bay .The image is constructed from collaged fractal images of my wife, children and grandchildren. It also includes images from past artworks on the theme of “survival” and repeated typographic patterns of names of pain-controlling drugs. Together they form a metaphoric suit of armour shielding my “warrior within”.

PETER HOLLARD
of Maleny with InanimateObjects.760cm x 1140cm Charcoal, graphite, pastel on paper

Peter’s current work is inspired by a working visit to France – its landscapes, rich artistic culture and classical architecture. Peter says his art “deals with the sensuality and beauty of the human figure.”
