PAUL CHING-BOR is a Chinese-born Australian who lives in the USA, but continues his long-standing representation at ‘Art on Cairncross’, where he will be the feature artist during June.
Paul was singled out to study fine art aged just twelve in his home of Guangzhou, and by eighteen was painting full-time. His studies continued through university but he was streamlined into studying sculpture and ceramics rather than the painting he loved, which prompted the move in 1987 to settle in Sydney as a professional artist.
His obvious talent for evocative contemporary watercolours was soon gaining him major awards and attention, such as selection for the Wynne Prize Exhibition in two consecutive years.
In 1996 Ching-Bor, aided by a second Mercedes-Benz scholarship, moved to New York, where his career started to encompass yet another continent and more accolades – a Gold Medal in the Allied Artists of America to name just one.
Greatly inspired by the rarely lauded aspects of the New York urban landscape, such as steel bridges, dark concrete corners and even the headlights of the traffic, he has explored less obvious views to great effect.
His techniques with watercolour produce works of extraordinary strength which absorb the viewer, for the longer the look, the more revealing the scene. His paintings portray the essence of city living from New York to Brisbane, London to Sydney, but this exhibition will also include earlier Melbourne works and more. These days much of his work is commissioned for major buildings including the new World Financial Centre in Shanghai.
This is a rare opportunity to see a collection of work by this fascinating artist and all are welcome to ‘Art on Cairncross’, Cairncross Corner, Maleny, open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. Also images can be viewed at www.artoncairncross.com.au
