WHAT DO Carey Grant, Jeannie Little and Fran-N-Furter have in common? They will all appear at the Sustainable Maleny Op Shop Ball. Well, at least their look-alikes will!
“The Op Shop Ball is not a fundraiser, it’s a fun raiser,” said Shivanii Cameron, a member of Sustainable Maleny. “It’s an opportunity to dress up to the hilt and dance the night away to great music. You can learn medieval dances with Musica Prima , brush up your tango with recorder group I Dolci Venti, and lose yourself in the African dance rhythm of Obi Abata. It’s going to be a really fun night!”
Local “op shops” are all being alerted that there may be a rush in glam clothing this month, so get in early and don’t miss out. There’ll be prizes awarded for best outfits whether it’s Dame Edna, Elton John, Kylie Minogue, or Audrey Hepburn. You and your dance partner may even qualify for the Fred and Ginger award!
Sustainable Maleny (www.sustainablemaleny.org) is an organisation run by volunteers to promote sustainability and community strength in Maleny and its environs, with projects supporting local food, local economy and renewable energy.
Monthly forums are held at the old Witta school at 10am in conjunction with Witta farmers markets (3rd Saturday of the month), and currently feature guest speakers from the stallholders in the “Talk the Walk” series. The sustainability centre/library is open at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on Fridays from 10am to 1pm.
The Op Shop Ball on Saturday July 10 from 7pm is an opportunity for a good party, a fun time and a great social gathering, while supporting local industry and musicians. Tickets are $25 ($20 member/concession), available from Maleny Bower Bird. Supper can be purchased from Spaghetti Junction, and the bar will be open.
