Health & Beauty

A NEW support group for people with depression will be facilitated in Maleny by Margaret Davoren. Margaret runs a counselling practice in the Allied Health room of the Maleny Physiotherapy Practice. Margaret holds a Bachelor of Nursing and a Master of Counselling and has previously worked with clients whose lives are effected by depression, anxiety and substance misuse disorders.

The meetings are suitable for people who are experiencing depressive symptoms and anyone who has a loved one who they wish to support. Depression is close to being the world’s second most debilitating condition by 2020. There are now more medications available to treat depression but it is still on the rise in all age groups. It is a complex disorder and research shows that a three-pronged treatment is the best approach. The three suggested ways of tackling depression are through medication, counselling/psychotherapy and self help.

It is best to discuss this thoroughly with your G.P. The support group sessions will contain some talking, some listening and some learning. Margaret Devoran says, “I think it is helpful for people to know that others are struggling with similar issues and that there is hope and help available. Whilst taking the first step to attend a meeting is difficult, it can be empowering for people to feel that they are actively trying to resolve their problems”.

For further information please contact Margaret Davoren. Mob: 0403 571 572. The first meeting will be held on: Wednesday 24 Feb, 2010 from 6.30 – 8.30pm and then, the last Wednesday of every month. Venue: Downunder Room. Maleny Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Bean Street Maleny. Cost: $5 per person each meeting. (This will help with photocopying handouts and for tea/coffee/refreshments).
