Visual Arts

CATHY LAWLEY local award winning potter, is opening her studio to the public for the first time, and offering clay indulgence workshops, “ fun in the mud”

“It’s a beautiful place to work”, said Cathy. “When I bought the property 5 years ago, I fell in love with the old Queenslander which was originally transported from Spring Hill in Brisbane. But it didn’t come with a studio, so with the skill of Rob, my brother and three sons,( It helps having tradesman in the family!) we created a gorgeous sandstone studio. It nestles into the original shed beautifully.”

Clay making is an experience of deep satisfaction, joy, and creativity and being at one with the clay is an experience to remember. Anyone can make a piece of pottery, from a thought through to the hands your creation is formed. Cathy hopes that everyone who attends her workshops comes away not only with their work of art, but having experienced the creative joy, that she still posesses after 26yrs.

The classes will be small – no more than six in a workshop. This way everyone gets the attention they need. The weekend course will cost $200 and this will include: morning and afternoon tea, clay and designer apron. You can take your piece home with you to fire or as an added addition come again for the experience of a traditional Japanese Raku firing Aussie style, and see your pieces fired while you watch on sipping a refreshing iced tea. Workshops have been extended to February 20th and 21st. Some of the workshop packages Cathy intends holding through out the year include Mother and Daughter workshops, Hens night out, and couples creating that something special.

For more information on the workshops you can email cathy@friedmudd.com or phone 5494 2892. Cathy is currently working on a large water feature uniquely designed for the Australia’s first Women in to Building Housing Showcase project, led by Sam Sheppard of the Build more Building group, due to be finished in February.
