Pathway with an inlaid past

An unusual, eye-catching concrete pathway at the Hinterland Business Centre in Maleny is the first project completed by the new ArtSite artists collective.

Instead of creating an ordinary pathway, with predictable width and depth of concrete, ArtSite, thought laterally. They turned a basic pathway into an art piece, that told a story, as well as a place to pause and ponder the basic bits and pieces, brought together, leading to 38a Coral Street, Maleny.

Predictably for this Hinterland community many people came together to form up and build the path, provide materials, concrete mixer and concrete. Inlaid into the path are elements of the district’s past – timber blocks, chains and the hand prints of local aboriginal, Beverley Hand.

The pathway is a reminder of the connection from public street to a community commercial centre but with a sustainable focus, where economic, social, and ecological facets interweave. Cr Jenny McKay reminded all at the opening that this was the first pathway to be officially opened by a Sunshine Coast Regional Councillor.
