I GUESS we’re all now focused on Christmas and thoughts of relaxing through Queensland’s long hot summer. So, this month there’s plenty of relaxing reading on the beach towel or the backyard deckchair. A Christmas cover story was on our minds when Lovice Lowden showed us her miniature donkeys here in Maleny. Lovice told us a couple of interesting stories about the donkey and why she and her grandson have become so fond of them.
Graham Plummer has a great fishing story – fighting the tough black bass of Papua New Guinea – and he’s made a documentary film to reveal the giant that got away. And talking of giants, one of the greats of Australian painting – Lawrence Daws – is putting together a remarkable review of his life’s work. He has lived near Beerwah since 1974 and now, at 82, Lawrence will show more than 50 works at the Caloundra Regional Gallery in January.
Our annual Christmas catalogue has again been put together with special gifts in mind. Its 24 pages feature more than 45 of our most creative retailers, artists and craftspeople on the Hinterland.
On a more thoughtful note, Howard Buckley reflects on the confusing signals being sent to young people these days about body image and self esteem and Hinterland architect, David Gole reveals how he and local builder Ed Lawley turned a sad 70s house into a contemporary home.
The small team at the Hinterland Times wish our readers and advertisers a restful and enjoyable Christmas & New Year. It’s been a busy 2009 for us and we have now increased our distribution to 18,000 to meet Hinterland residents requests … and of course those cheeky tourists who keep taking the magazine home. We look forward to informing and entertaining you in 2010.
