WORMS DOWNUNDER owners, Dr Pene Mitchell and Dr Paul Harrey, have relocated their family, fleet of worms and manufacturing facility to Western Avenue in Montville. The huge move, uprooting hundreds of thousands of live worms, has taken three weeks, but ‘the worms have settled in well’, says Paul. ‘I think they like the view!’

It is no wonder, with spectacular views of Baroon Dam and untouched rainforest, which is the natural abode of compost worms.

The benefits of compost worms are significant. They can process up to 60% of the waste matter usually sent to landfill which would relieve a significant environmental burden, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, acid leachate, and CO2 emissions from trucking waste around the Coast.

The resultant products which cost nothing are beneficial, safe and nutrient rich.

Worms Downunder manufactures and supplies worm farms and compost worms and provides advice on waste management Australia wide. They have supplied thousands of systems to a diverse range of domestic and commercial establishments.

Schools, farmers, greengrocers, sporting clubs, resorts, and horse owners all love worm farms due to the ease of use. Paul, an industrial designer, has developed and now manufactures at Montville a Worm Habitat range which fills a need for larger systems which haven’t been available until now.

They are also distributors for the Organic Bio-Converter (OBC) which is a patented vermiculture operation developed in South Australia by Wormswork. This is the largest vermiculture technology in the southern hemisphere, with the ability to process the municipal organic7waste stream.

Recent winners of the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Eco-Agri Business of the year, Pene and Paul are proud of the achievement of Worms Downunder. They estimate that thousands of tons of waste per year is now processed sustainably using their systems.

Pene believes that the effectiveness of worm farming will enable everyone to process their own waste. ‘It is extremely satisfying to take responsibility of your own waste and know that you are doing something positive for the environment,’ she said. www.wormsdownunderdownunder.com.au.
