THE HINTERLAND TIMES has been judged the best looking regional paper in the state for the second year running by the Queensland Country Press Association.
The Hinterland Times won three awards in the annual Queensland Country Press Awards function held in Brisbane recently.
The magazine received the Technical Excellence award for a publication circulation of 5-20,000. The judges said that the Hinterland Times “makes excellent use of colour and half tones … and was produced with a high standard of composition design right throughout the pages”.
The Hinterland Times also came first for the Best Locally Produced Full Colour Advertisement (Pole Home Group).
The judges said, “the winner… is a subtle, information-laden advertisement, which does not shout, but seeks only to inform. It has a simple layout, with clear, well positioned graphics and editorial-like body copy.”
Hinterland Times manager, Faith Baigent said, “we have put a lot of effort into getting professional designers to give readers attractive layouts because we are read widely now from Brisbane to Noosa.”
We constantly listen to the feedback of readers”, she added. “They prefer the more journalistic advertorial approach to the ‘screamers’ – the ads that talk loud but tell readers very little.” A second prize was awarded to the magazine for the Best Community Promotion for The Festival of the The Walks run by the Blackall Range Business and Tourism Association.
The judge said of this category that “community promotions by the local newspaper are a rolled- gold sure-fire way to stitch your publication into the fabric of your local society”.
The other independent publication on the Hinterland, The Glasshouse Country News won four advertising awards in this state-wide competition which is open to all country newspapers in Queensland.
