FOUR TASTY pies from Maleny’s Beechwood Bakehouse have picked up bronze medals in the Great Aussie Meat Pie competition in Sydney.
Tom and Anne Butler are delighted that their pies stood out from the many hundreds entered for this national quest for the best Aussie icon. After 20 years this creative gourmet competition is keenly fought out with pies containing Aussie beef, lamb, pork, veal, buffalo, seafood, game, vegetarian and chicken.
The Beechwood Bakehouse pie medals were for pies containing buffalo, silverside, steak, tomato, pepper and cheese and chunky steak and peas.
Tom said there was nothing really special about his winning pies. “ We just took them from a normal batch of pies out of the oven, and we won four bronze medals with four pies”. Tom is a baker and caterer originally from New Zealand and, with his wife Anne, they have been running the Beechwood Bakehouse for four years at the top end of town.
They say their popular bakery is always busy and their success is probably due to always using the freshest local ingredients.
