The Wishing Well Live at Finbar’s
Melbourne-based musician and songwriter Jai Larkan and his band The Wishing Well are finally visiting the Range for a once only show at Finbar ’s Lounge Bar in Maleny on Friday September 18.
Jai’s deeply emotional songs are backed up by acoustic guitar, rich orchestral arrangements and a full rock contemporary rhythm section. His wife Rivkah plays support violin while the flamboyant crowd-pleasing Sarah rips it up with her passionate violin solos and melodies.
The band has played over 600 gigs and burned through 30 different band members since forming in 2007.
“Yeah, we’ve played our little hearts out,” says Jai. “Per forming that much can take its toll if you’re not in it for the music and the long haul.
Having sold over 3,700 copies of their debut album Life On The Border , the band now has many new fans waiting for the new album being recorded in October this year.
The Wishing Well are a not-to-be-missed band for those who love folk rock with heart. If you enjoy David Gray, Dav Matthews Band, and The Waterboys you will love The Wishing Well.
Show starts 9pm. Support act Herrin starts at 8pm. Entry $10.
On Friday September 25, Finbar ’s presents two masters of Irish music – Antoin MacGabhann on fiddle and Mick O’Connor on banjo with Tony O’Rourke on guitar. Antoin is a purist when it comes to fiddle playing, Irish language and culture. He has a tremendous respect for the old traditional musicans, whose music he says is much more distinctive than the fast style of music we hear today. He is a continuously active promoter of fiddle playing, traditional music, Irish language and culture.
Mick O’Connor hails from London . He inherited a love of Irish music from his parents who came from counties Kerry and Kasscommon in Ireland.

Icons of Rock ‘n’ Roll
Main Street Gallery, Montville, will host Colin Beard’s new exhibition, Icons of Rock ‘n’ Roll, from September 26 – November 7.
Colin Beard is regarded as one of Australia’s foremost creative photographers. In his latest exhibition, he has chosen a selection from his vast photographic library that highlights his work for Go-Set Magazine during the 60s.
Icons of Rock ‘n’ Roll depicts many of the major rock stars of the day, people such as Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger, Cat Stevens, Cher (pictured), the Easybeats, John Farnham and many others. Colin was invited into their world, and so was able to portray them in their more offbeat and intimate moments. He has given us a unique view of a world now past, when rock stars were ‘characters’, self-motivated and free, not products of the music industry as most are today.
Main Street Gallery is located at 157 Main St, Montville.
The sexes unite at the Joining
Marriages today have a four in ten chance of ending in divorce. The Joining is an annual gathering held at Ewan Maddock Dam, Landsborough, that aims to address this problem and encourage people to establish more conscious and effective relationships.
Held each year around the Spring equinox, the 2009 event will run from September 24 to 27, and welcomes all men and women, whether single or in a relationship.
The Joining began in 2002 and now attracts about 150 participants. It is organised by the Genesis Foundation, a non-profit, incorporated association dedicated to sustainable culture (www.thejoining.com.au).

MarimbaFest is on again!
Vibrant marimba melodies will echo through the trees at Crystal Waters, Conondale when MarimbaFest gears up again from September 11-13.
It will be even bigger and better this year, with organiser Fatima, a Maleny resident and musician, having scored two grants by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and RADF towards costs of producing this year ’s event.
This unique festival is dedicated entirely to the playing of the marimba (wooden xylophone), and offers a unique opportunity for beginners to experienced players to learn a wide variety of marimba songs from well-known marimba teachers in a supportive and fun environment. Poet’s breakfast returns
Saturday September 26 sees the return of the popular Poets’ Breakfast, part of the Kenilworth Celebrates! Festival.
With a winning mix of some champion poets, such as Hagar, a.k.a. the Poetry Nurse (pictured below), along with the delightfully unknown element of an open microphone, the end result is two and a half hours of rhyming mayhem.
The most frequently heard comment from an appreciative audience it s that they didn’t think poetry could be that much fun.
The Breakfast runs from 8am-10.30am10.30 alongside the Kenilworth Hall and entry is $5. Breakfast is available, with catering this year by Kenilworth College P&C and refreshments by Save the Mary.
Host for the breakfast is popular local poet Ian Mackay and special visitors this year include the most welcome return of Shirley Friend, a firm, if rather irreverent, favourite with poetry audiences across the nation.
For enquiries contact Ian, Ph: 5446 0124 (evenings, weekends).
Bollywood comes to Maleny
Gods of Spicy Things: a divine comedy brings Bollywood to Maleny Community Centre on Friday September 11.
Following a sell-out 2008 season in far north Queensland, Queensland Arts Council will present this deliciously spicy JUTE Theatre and Crossroad Arts co-production around Queensland.
The play is a colourful, mystical romp through India with all the elements of a Bollywood hit movie – romance, fate, family, a hint of pathos and a good dose of singing and dancing.
Written by Sue Hayes, it follows Leela, a magazine writer seeking exotic adventures and Chris, a slick London advertising guru visiting his Indian homeland to scatter his mother ’s ashes. These unsuspecting mortals are thrown together by two Hindu gods, in a clash of divine wills which takes them on an unexpected journey.
Performers Sue Hayes and Christopher Glover play a variety of roles and manipulate colour ful puppets to re- create the feverish energy of India.
