Edible Ornamental – Grumichama Eugenia brasiliensis
Native to Brazil and belonging to family Myrtaceae, the Grumichama is a highly ornamental tree growing 5-10m tall with an erect, bushy habit. It is evergreen with dark glossy leaves and can be pruned into a fruity hedge if desired. A free, draining loamy soil slightly acid is ideal.
Being drought sensitive, watering in dry periods in summer is recommended. Although it would tolerate semi shade a sunny position is desirable.
Growing well in tropical, subtropical to temperate climates it takes 4-5 years to fruit. Individual trees may fruit at slightly different times, so having a few trees would extend your harvesting time.
From flowering to fruiting only takes about 30 days with fruit ripening quickly. The harvesting period is
November to December. The dark shiny purple fruit have thin skins with delicious white to red aromatic flesh like a cherry. There is also a yellow-skinned variety. The fruit can be eaten raw or made into jam, jellies or wine.There are usually 1-2 seeds per fruit from which new plants could easily be propagated. If you are looking for a spectacular ornamental specimen then it would be hard to go past this tree with its magnificent flowers, glossy dark green foliage. The tasty fruit is high in Vitamin C and Calcium.
