Mick Hart Oz tour to rock Maleny
ARIA nominated artist Mick Hart continues his huge “What Lies Beneath” tour with a show at the Maleny Community Centre on Friday 24 July.
Praised across the globe by critics and fans including Ben Harper and Jeff Buckley’s manager Dave Lory, Mick has supported music giants Bob Dylan, Sting, Coldplay, Van Morrison, Taj Mahal, The Pretenders, Paul Kelly and John Butler Trio.
Australian singer/songwriter Mick Hart has been touring the world for the past 10 years, playing festivals and concerts all over Australia, Europe, the UK, Japan and the USA. A prolific songwriter, Mick’s latest album, “What Lies Beneath”, showcases his beautiful, emotive folk pop to catchy hard-edged rock/roots. His songs display an enormous depth and brilliant musicality. Mick plays guitars, lap steel, keyboards and harmonica, and is backed by his talented band mates, Damian Leonard (bass) and Tony Chubb (drums).

Top conductor for Pacific Chamber
The return of the former Suncoast Sinfonia, playing under the new name of Pacific Chamber Orchestra will be exciting news for previous loyal patrons who so much enjoyed their concert series for a number of years at St Marks Church in Buderim.
The concert, titled ‘Purely Mozart’, will be performing at the Caloundra Uniting Church on Sunday 26th July at 2pm. Janet Brewer will be the soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A, K488.
The orchestra will be conducted by the youthful and accomplished conductor and musician, Andrew Robinson.
Andrew Robinson has conducted many of the leading orchestras in Australia and the US. Winner of the ABC-Westfield Young Conductor of the Year award in 1997, he was Assistant Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra from 1998-2001, performing with the orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl and Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
In Australia, he has appeared with the Queensland Symphony, the Tasmanian Symphony, the Melbourne Symphony, the Canberra Symphony, and the State Orchestra of Victoria, as well as the Brisbane Philharmonic.
His work with choirs is also notable, having served several times as guest chorus master of the Los Angeles Master Chorale in new music collaborations with the LA Philharmonic.
Andrew first studied flute at the Canberra School of Music before turning to conducting. In 1998 he was selected as one of three young conductors from around the world to perform in Carnegie Hall at the inaugural Carnegie Hall Conductor’s Workshop, and subsequently was a Conducting Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts. An accomplished flautist, Andrew won the 7th Australia Flute Competition in 1995, and currently teaches and performs in Brisbane.

Kaye Gordon is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic voices in the world. Born in Gisborne, Kaye has a tribal heritage from the east coast of New Zealand. Her career out of NZ into Australia was launched by the legendary great late Prince Tui Teka, and Kaye has continued to amaze her audience with her versatile vocal ability.
Her first Solo performance was to packed audiences receiving standing ovations at the Royal Hawaiian in Honolulu. Kaye has an amazing ability to sing in different languages, excelling in, Maori, Italian, Chinese, Indonesian and Spanish. She was the only female vocalist chosen in Australia, to perform at the 30 years celebration between China and Australia – proudly performing a duet in Chinese with a Chinese opera star.
Her ‘big voice’ performances have included national anthems at international sporting events, such as the Bledisloe Cup in Brisbane earlier this year to inspirational dynamic stage performances at corporate functions and conferences.
To finish the year, Kaye is the star female performer at the “Spring Fling” at the Oxford Hotel Sydney to raise funds for Aids awareness. She will perform songs from legendary singers like Shirley Bassey, Tina Turner, The Platters, Tom Jones, and more. “These are the raunchy, big sounding vocals that really press my buttons”, says Kaye.
Kaye is excited about her work on a CD with world renowned producer Benjamin Wright – a man who works with stars such as Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Temptations, Destiny’s Child, and Toni Braxton, “I am very excited that for the first time in my life, I can confidently say, ‘It is time’, says Kaye.

Brett is top children’s performer
Local Maleny children’s songwriter/performer, Brett Campbell, has achieved the distinction of being the most booked Sonicbids act in the world for May 2009.
U.S. music industry website, Sonicbids, is a major world wide resource helping thousands of artists to further their careers and obtain work.
Brett is now a popular artist with the Queensland pre-school set and his shows are mainly daycare and kindergarten based with around 150 [and counting] shows booked for 2009. In addition, Brett regularly performs for Lifeline on the Sunshine Coast and has upcoming concerts for RBH Children’s and the Auckland Folk Festival.
Brett was a semi finalist at the 2008 UK Songwriting contest and has been added to several US internet children’s radio stations. These include Jitterbug along side such acts as Nora Jones and Elmo and mainstream artists dipping their toes into kids tunes like Jack Johnson, They Might Be Giants and Ziggy Marley.
Brett is looking forward to releasing his 3rd children’s album this year and is thrilled to be able to work so much playing music for kids.

Actor John Wood was at the opening of the funky new gallery in the main street of Eumundi on June 21. The Art Bank is named after the sandstone bank of NSW . Owner and artist Margi Lim exhibited works which have been shown in five solo New York exhibitions. Apart from Margi’s exotic paintings the raw brick walls of the gallery also display an international selection of photography and the super realism of metaphorical artist, Vladimir Kush.

Kenilworth Art Prize now $15,000

Thanks to the Sunshine Coast Regional Council the Kenilworth Art Prize (formerly The Mayor’s Prize) is alive and well. The S.C.R.C. in partnership with Kenilworth Arts Council Inc is awarding $1500 for an acquisitive painting prize. The Art Prize finalists and winner will be exhibited at Kenilworth Celebrates! Hipshooters at Palmwoods Hotel
International blues guitarist from Texas, Steve Lott (right) makes his way to the Palmwoods Hotel this month. Also in the July lineup is the home-grown blues rock band, the Hipshooters. These boys play 90 per cent of their own music and are well known in Brisbane.

Weaving magic @ Cooroy Workshop
The Butter Factory Arts Centre in Cooroy is presenting Woven Story, a Flying Arts weekend workshop with visiting textile artist Wanda Bennett on 11 and 12 July.
The workshop focuses on teaching the art of weaving in 3D, allowing participants to use a range of materials including cane, fabric, natural fibres and handmade paper.
They will learn basic weaving skills and explore the use of colour, texture and text to create a woven 3D object – a memento of a particularly special time, place or personal story.
Presented by Flying Arts Inc, the workshop will be led by Wanda Bennett, a textile artist specialising in contemporary fibre weaving and wearable art.

John Chen at Lucas Parklands
The formidable young pianist John Chen performs in Montville in August, revealing his rare talents. At 18 John was the youngest-ever winner of the prestigious Sydney International Piano Competition. He has gone to work with the big six Australian orchestras and has been placed in the top 50 power players to watch in the arts by Limelight magazine.
Ian and Lee Lucas have the remarkable knack of attracting the world’s top pianists to perform at their Montville hideaway, and John Chen is another special talent attracted to their small but stunning performance space.
John Chen starts an Australian tour in Montville on August 8 at 7pm at Lucas Parklands. He goes on to Lismore, Coffs Harbour and Armidale.
His programme includes: Haydn, Debussy, Beethoven, Ravel and Tchaikovsky.
