An Unreal World
Born in Melbourne in 1971, Adam moved with his parents to Saunders Beach, a little north of Townsville, when he was fifteen.
“Our family home was a stone’s throw from the water’s edge and surrounded by natural beauty. Our nearest neighbour was just a dot on the horizon. It suited my temperament but I did become quite reclusive,” Adam explained.
Adam demonstrated a talent for the arts from an early age but drama and music were his main focus until the age of twenty eight.
“I was still living at home. I wasn’t earning a satisfactory income from my music and I felt trapped. It was time for a major change in my life.
“I picked up a paintbrush and began painting. It didn’t take me long to realize it was something I really enjoyed doing. My father, Richard, who is a highly regarded, accomplished artist, was an obvious influence along with Brett Whitely and Francis Bacon. Concepts in my early paintings were drawn from my favourite musicians – Prince, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix.”
In 2000, the Bogusz family moved to Brisbane and Adam’s life changed forever.
“At first I felt pretty daunted by the city and had feelings of trepidation of not knowing where to go,” Adam said. “A year late I met my wife, Sarah, and life blossomed. My paintings changed from solitary, downcast figures with the city on top of them to courting couples and outdoor scenes.
I use maps of Brisbane from Google Earth to get an outline of the city but I am not interested at all in recreating reality. I do use references of Brisbane such as the Story Bridge and the river but the cities in my paintings are imaginary.”
Adam’s cityscapes are an abstraction of the “real world”. Imaginary cities are fashioned from blocks of colour and the human form is often surreal and sometimes representational.
Open daily from 10am to 5pm, the gallery is located at 138 Main Street, Montville, opposite the Village Green. Adam’s paintings is featured under “Exhibitions” on the gallery’s website: www.montvilleartgallery.com.au
