Let Food Be Your Medicine
According to Ayurveda “The distinction between health and disease arises as the result of the difference between wholesome and unwholesome diet…disease is the result of faulty nutrition”.
We are what we eat. Every year about 95% of our cells are renewed so we are constantly recreating ourselves out of the food we eat. To dismiss the effect of our diet on our health and well-being is to miss the point of health care.
Diet is not merely an adjunct to other health treatments; it is a therapeutic modality in itself. Long term sinus headaches can disappear after reducing cheese, yogurt and chocolate; persistent skin complaints can diminish with a reduction in spicy and acidic foods while sleepless nights and nervous energy can dissipate with an increase in a warm, unctuous, nourishing food.
Knowledge of your basic nature and current imbalances gives the key when choosing the appropriate diet for you as well as adjusting your meals to suit the seasons.
Ayurveda understands the body as a dynamic pattern or network of intelligence. Healthy food can enliven this underlying pattern and contribute to its state of balance. Not only does our food add matter and energy to the physiology but, it also increases order in our system which is continually resisting the disordering effect of entropy.
Freshly grown, picked, cooked food is best. In the case of most food, if it is processed, left over or genetically modified then these effects are significantly diminished and can even create disorder. Powered, diet meals may help you lose weight but they will not add to the intelligence of the physiology. Similarly a handful of food supplements will never replace the real thing.
Nature is intelligent; fruit, vegetables and herbs contain much more than what is generally understood by simple nutrition. The modern medical approach of replacing natural herbs with the synthetic, active ingredient not only loses the benefits of the antioxidant, anti-cancerous, liver supporting bioflavonoids naturally occurring in plants but also compromises the synergistic effects of the whole plant. This can lead to further imbalance in the physiology.
