Dear Marisa,
I know that the economy is in bad shape for everybody, but first my husband and now my daughter have lost their jobs during the past three months. I am finding it very difficult to stay positive and make ends meet at the same time. Personally, I get a lot of comfort from reading, but it is difficult to support family members when they look so down, and you don’t know how to help them. As a family, we have never experienced such a depressing time. I know there are no simple solutions but I admire your wisdom through this column, so I wonder if you have any advice.

Dear Carol
One of the problems one faces when a job is lost is that often confidence is lost as well. First I would suggest that you encourage your family not to watch the news every night. Once a week will do to keep you all updated, while nightly viewing will just add to the sense of gloom and doom.
Make sure that both your husband and your daughter maintain their level of fitness by regular walking and exercise as this has been shown to amplify positive chemistry and helps to reduce stress chemistry.
Within every situation there is always a positive. Perhaps your husband and daughter could start their own small business, like mowing lawns or even baking for the weekend markets. I have been trying to buy an old-fashioned push along toy for my grandson and can’t find a reliable one anywhere. From talking to several mums I’m sure there is a market out there for a handyman who can make these simple but very handy aids for children just starting to walk.
There are many many ways in which money can be earned, but it just takes thinking outside the normal pathways of experience.
If your husband or daughter are open to the suggestion, I’d be happy to offer them a session for some life coaching.
Out of this difficult time many people will find their true purpose, there are always so many possibilities open to us. We just need to listen to our Great Spirits, not to the voice of the media.
Love Marisa
