A portrait called ‘Michael Nelson Jagamara and singing rain story’ by Maleny-based artist David Paulson has been selected to hang in this year’s national Archibald Portrait Prize at the NSW Art Gallery. “It must be the fresh air in Maleny”, jokes David, whose paintings have been hung three times in Australia’s most prestigious art prize. David chose aboriginal painter and friend Michael Nelson Jagamara as his subject combining Nelson’s message of an old man singing as a dominant theme within the frame – not surprising since Michael sees himself through signs and totems. The Archibald prize winner is chosen on March 6.
