Holes in the brain
When we use our brain we create interneuronal connections between different parts of the brain. When we learn a language, practice a musical instrument or play sport we are hard wiring the brain. That means it is easier to do the activity the next time because the neuronal pathways are already laid down.
Psychological research has found that many aspects of cognitive development such as general intelligence, field independence (the ability to maintain inner stability in a changing environment) and ego development do not continue to expand much past the age of 17. The old adage ‘use it or lose it’ also applies to the brain’s ability.
In fact brain imaging techniques that provide pictures of brain functioning reveal that functional holes can be found in the brains of people who are not using their full brain potential. These areas of very low metabolic activity are similar, but less severe, to those holes found in the brains of people who are addicted to alcohol or drugs. (Note: these are functional holes not structural holes) Psychologists say that we use only about 10% of our full mental potential and even Einstein stated that he was only using about 20% of his total brain.
Quantum physics has discovered the Unified Field which is the most subtle level of nature’s functioning. At this level of life everything appears to be connected, matter is no longer perceived as separate, solid objects. It is also the home of all the laws that govern every aspect of nature. We are able to experience this level of unity in our human awareness when we experience Transcendental Consciousness. This experience of Transcendental Consciousness enlivens the total brain and brings about more holistic brain functioning. Transcendental Consciousness is accessed during the practice of Transcendental Meditation.
Research shows that people practicing Transcendental Meditation display greater integration of brain functioning, increased blood flow to the brain and increased use of hidden reserves. This translates into improvements in IQ, faster recovery from stress, better memory and even the reversal of the normal detrimental effects of the aging process with respect to brain functioning.
