Many months back I wrote about mobile phone use quoting news articles on children and mobiles. Just this month the French government has set a standard by being the first in the world to move on the children’s mobile phone issue. Under the headline – “France Cracks Down on Children’s Mobile Phone use, but Britain still Ignoring Warnings”, the UK Daily Mail (11/1/09) ran a story on the French decision to ban phone advertising for children under 12. It will also take steps to ban completely the sale of phones designed for those under six years (see – www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1112123/ ).
And the government will set new limits for handset radiation and make it compulsory for them to be sold with earphones. They warned that the young may be “more sensitive (to radiation) because their bodies are still developing”… Children’s heads are smaller and their skulls thinner”. The government now sees these phones as a health risk, with advertisements in major cities this week reading:  “Let’s keep them healthy, Away from mobile phones! ”
Swedish research indicates that young people are five times more likely to get brain cancer if they use mobiles, leading to warnings of a later ‘epidemic’ among users. In September 2008, the European Parliament voted to urge ministers across Europe to bring in stricter radiation limits.  In Canada health officials warn teenagers to keep calls shorter than ten minutes, and Russia advises under 18s to avoid using phones.
In Australia, Dr Vini Khurana, a Canberra neurosurgeon, said that studies linking EM radiation and brain tumours were showing the danger to health for the younger generation which may be more of a risk than asbestos or smoking (Canberra Times, 27/3/08). It’s becoming clear that the pitch by telecommunications companies to sell every child a mobile may soon reach a turning point. Health and safety issues are becoming much more important than instant texting.
