Maharishi Ayurveda uses the Sanskrit term Swastha to define health. “Swa” means self and “stha” means established. Therefore one who is established in the Self is healthy. The Self in this sense refers to the universal Self that is awake to all the laws of nature.
Being established in the bigger Self, the individual is more self aware. One of the key aspects of Ayurveda is that it understands that we each have a unique physiology and therefore need the right diet, daily routine, herbs and exercise program to suit our nature. Our metabolism, state of mind and constitutional strength all determine our state of health, as well as all the environmental influences such as the weather, seasons and the people and situations around us. The more in tune we are with what is going on inside us and the effects of the external forces the better we will be at choosing the most appropriate way to live.
Without this knowledge of our self, even our best intentions can bring random results. It is the nature of imbalance that we choose the wrong thing. Vata out of balance can make us anxious, unconfident and cause us to change our minds all the time. Pitta out of balance can make us inflexible in our attitudes, daily routine and diet while excess Kapha can make us lethargic about making any positive changes to our life.
By pacifying the doshic imbalances, Ayurveda brings balance back to the self, increasing our own self awareness and therefore helping spontaneous right action to develop. When we sense imbalance arising, for example feeling irritated due to the hot weather, we naturally steer away from a hot coffee, spicy meal or acidic fruit instead craving a cool drink, fresh salad or watermelon. There are general guidelines but what we need will differ from person to person, day to day and season to season.
The point is the more established in Being we are, the more self referral we are, we eat or do what our physiology needs without recourse to habit, rules or what everyone else is doing.
