A common cliche has it that a picture tells a thousand words. Sadly these days pictures too often tell disturbing stories of violence, community crises and anguish.
That’s the thinking behind the inauguration of a new international photographic competition being run by the organisers of the Heart of Gold Film Festival in Gympie.
“These new awards are designed to fill people’s minds with stories of joy, beauty and hope,” says Heart of Gold Film Festival Director Toni Powell.
Entries are now open for the photographic awards, and organisers are looking forward to showcasing photographs that move people and the world in positive directions.
Awards will be given to the photos that best encapsulate subjects of love, hope, connection, creativity, fun, family and happiness.
Two age group categories are open for entries: 17 years and under and general 18 years plus.
As well as winning a major photography award, the winners’ photographs will be displayed in an exhibition at the Heart of Gold film festival in March 2009. Six different awards per age category are available, plus a major prize in each category. The total value of cash and prizes exceeds $9,000.
“Our jury is a mix of award winning photographers, respected industry professionals and a famous face or two including Andrew G from Australian Idol,” said exhibition organiser Hailey Bartholomew.
