Montville Art Gallery’s Artist of the Month – James Hough

The Australian Bush and its inhabitants

Born in Newcastle, New South Wales in 1960, James Hough spent most of his childhood on his family’s cattle property on the Manning River.  This is where he developed his great love of the Australian bush and its inhabitants particularly Australian native birds.
After spending twenty years as an engineering surveyor and civil designer, James began painting seriously in 1999 but it was not until 2003 that he became a full time wildlife artist.
“One of my early influences was the illustrations and paintings of William Cooper,” James explained.  “I have always been intrigued by how cleverly some artists breathe life into their compositions and in the fascinating depth of detail they achieve.”
James travels extensively throughout Australia in search of birds and animals within their typical landscape.
“I just love getting out into the Australian bush seeking out new ideas for my paintings.  My aim is to create the most life-like image I can.  Every painting begins as a detailed sketch on clay-coated board.  It is them completed using acrylic paint and gouache.  I use layers of transparent colour to build the tonal effects for the background.  I use both light and intricate detail to try and capture the very essence of the native birds and animals and the environment in which each breed is found.”
James’ paintings can be found in collections both here in Australia and in many overseas countries.  Some have been reproduced as limited edition prints, calendars and gift cards.  They have featured in many books and magazine publications including Australian Artist and Australian Birdkeeper.  He is a member of the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia and his paintings have been selected for display each year at their annual exhibition.
“We are delighted to have James Hough as our first artist of the month for 2009” said gallery manager, Lisa Powell.  “Also, James will be demonstrating his skills at the gallery from 11am to 3pm on Friday 16th, Saturday 17th and Sunday the 18th of January.”
The Montville Art Gallery is open from 10 to 5, seven days a week and is located at 138 Main Street, Montville, opposite the Village Green.
