EMR Environments & Alzheimers

The topic this month is on EMF environment (Electromagnetic Fields), part of the daily invisible energies that you cannot see but nevertheless, effect you and have an impact on your health.

Last year, in a review for the ‘Bio-Initiative Report’, Zoreh Davanipour  and Gene Sobel concluded there is “strong epidemiological evidence” that magnetic fields are a risk factor for Alzheimer’s Disease. In 1994, Davanipour and Sobel, who are husband and wife team based in Chicago, were first to note this association (Microwave News, J/A94). Seamstresses using industrial sewing machines appeared most vulnerable. “This new Swiss study strengthens my opinion that long-term EMF exposure likely leads to Alzheimer’s,” Sobel told Microwave News (MWN).

In the April 2008 issue of the International Journal of Epidemiology, Ana Garcia of Valencia Univ. Spain, reported that combined data from 14 occupational studies showed that, in general, being exposed to EMFs on the job doubled the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. This is about the same as experiments found among those exposed to power lines at home (Röösli, MWN, 2008). And this could be a low estimate. If correct, then the risk is large because so many of us work around EMFs and microwave environments. One of the new factors too is wireless systems (WiFi) for computers and phones. The new study adds to a growing body of work that links Alzheimer’s to occupational EMF exposure (see www.microwavenews.com).

How does it happen? According to Sobel and Davanipour, they suggest that magnetic fields increase the flow of calcium ions into cells, and this in turn, leads to the build-up of amyloid beta, a known neurotoxin, in the blood stream. Amyloid beta eventually makes its way into the brain by crossing the blood-brain barrier, where, in ways not yet fully understood, it shows the  hallmarks of Alzheimer’s. If mobile phone radiation increases the permeability of the blood-brain barrier, another hot-scientific issue, then it may amplify the action of EMFs by helping amyloid beta cross from the blood stream into the brain. All of this is bad news for prolonged exposure to EMF. Check your workplace or have it assessed if you are concerned. Contact me through the address here.
