A Passion for Roses – Jill Kerstein
Montville Art Gallery’s artist of the month is Jill Kirstein who is considered by many to be one of the world’s foremost floral artists.
Born in Katoomba, New South Wales in 1937, Jill Kirstein moved with her parents to Bulawayo in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) in 1946. She was educated at the Bulawayo Dominican Convent where her artistic talent first became evident.
After marrying a Rhodesian cattle farmer and raising a family, Jill began painting again.
“It was the peace and tranquility of the panoramic views from our farmhouse that inspired me to take up painting again.” Jill told us.
“Then in the early 80s, I had the good fortune to meet Maurice Verelste, a brilliant Belgian artist, who painted florals in the style of the old masters. He encouraged me to find and develop my own personal style.”
From then on Jill’s artistic career flourished. She held numerous solo exhibitions and was commissioned to produce two paintings for the Government Chambers in Natal.
In 1986, political unrest in Southern Africa prompted Jill and her family to return to Australia.
“Jill has a passion for flowers, particularly roses,” said gallery manager, Lisa Powell. “She believes roses alone have the serene beauty and complexity to stand by themselves. Her soft, romantic style results in truly magnificent paintings worthy of “masterpiece” status.”
“I prefer to paint from real life and most of the roses I paint come from those that I grow in my own garden.” Jill added.
Jill’s paintings are represented in collections throughout the world. They have been included in the Connoisseurs Collection of Australian Art and the Jubilee Collectors Exhibition.
