Advertorial

Last year over 400 people attended the inaugural Small Breed Open Day held at Vitulus Lowline Stud. With over nine small breeds on show the day proved very popular for those seeking to make that ‘Tree Change’.
“Many people on small acreage are dual income households,” said breeder Margo Hayes. “Often women will be involved with the livestock and management of the farm.”
“Small breeds fit these requirements perfectly whether it is just as a hobby, to keep the grass down, develop a show quality herd, or to produce a small number of beef animals for the domestic market. Small, docile breeds are easy on the land and fit easily with sustainable agriculture.
“The Open Day being held on November 1 will have an emphasis on education, and how to care and look after your livestock. The day will provide people with a chance to view these registered small breeds together, talk to the breeders and learn from lectures and information on offer. In addition There will also be demonstrations and a range of agricultural equipment on display that are relevant to small breeds.
Margo Hayes is no stranger to competition having won Grand Champion Australian Lowline Bull at the Royal Brisbane Show for seven consecutive years as well showing Grand Champion Carcass in 2007. So, Margo is keen to spread the word about the meat qualities of the smaller breeds. “They are designed for producers who want feed-efficient, early- maturing animals combined with exceptionally easy calving. Smaller Cattle have finer grained beef which is the most tender. I encourage anyone interested to phone or come along for the Open Day”.
Entry fee is $5 per head or $20 per family. Refreshments and entertainment will also be available on the day. Phone 5466 7266 for more information.
