Rebecca Berrett has a beautiful approach to her art. She has an amazing ability to draw and this is clearly demonstrated in her detailed botanical studies, but she also has a vivid imagination which is shown in her captivating fantasy works including roller-blading sheep, future fish and a seafaring tortoise. She has been published as author and illustrator of 4 different children’s books and as illustrator of no less than 19 other publications across a variety of subjects from science texts to storybooks. Rebecca is also a calligrapher and for many years scribed the degree certificates etc. for the University of Southern Queensland and has also been a regular tutor at the McGregor schools and other workshops in Book Illustration. “I have a deep love of the illustrated book and its ability to transport the reader to other worlds and other realities,” she says, “but my natural science drawing is the result of my striving to achieve a level of skill reflecting the world around me.”
In October a selection of her fascinating works will be featured at “Art on Cairncross” and will clearly show her talent including the continuing ‘Rachel the Sheep’ series of works – these delightful adventures will hopefully one day become a book, but for now are exquisite original paintings with appeal for young and old alike. “My art grows out of a tendency to doodle…a process I find particularly relaxing, meditative and fun.” Enjoy the fun and sheer craftsmanship of these very affordable works at ‘Art on Cairncross’ from October 7 to November 2 at Cairncross Corner, Maleny.
