Electoral boundary changes

The Queensland Electoral Commission has confirmed electorate boundary changes for the region, which will see Montville, Flaxton, Palmwoods and Eudlo moved from the Nicklin Electorate into the Electorate of Glass House. The new southern boundary of the electorate runs along the Hunchy Road, then west along various property boundaries toward Mapleton. Mapleton remains in the Nicklin Electorate.
I was disappointed to lose this part of my electorate where I have made many friends over the years. The redistribution has been calculated by the Commission, who make boundary decisions based on constituent numbers. To view the new maps visit http://www.ecq.qld.gov.au/asp/index.asp or I have copies of the new electorate maps in my Currie Street office.
Boost for Young Athlete funding:
The Youth Athlete Assistance Program has been popular with families in this area, providing some assistance to young athletes who need to travel away from home to compete in their chosen sport.
Sports Minister Judy Spence announced improvements to this assistance program. Funding will now apply to young sports people competing outside of Queensland or overseas (previously limited to Queensland travel only). Previously athletes could apply for $200 if travelling further than 300 kilometres away – now they can apply if they need to travel 200 kilometres away.

Montville Village Association AGM:
Jenny and I enjoyed catching up with local residents when we attended the Montville Village Association AGM. Congratulations to the former committee on their representation of the area, and I wish the new incoming committee all the best for the future.

New Nambour Fire Station
Construction of the new Nambour Fire Station, to be built in the Nambour-Bli Bli Road adjacent to the showgrounds, will start early next year. In Parliament last week I asked for an update on the progress of this important project. Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts told me that the design for the building is underway, and construction of the $3.65million fire station is due to start early in 2009. He has assured me that the site is large enough for the current needs and any future expansions.
