Artists Rex Backhaus-Smith and Judith Laws live their art. This is not purely about painting magnificent images, but also about surrounding themselves with beauty and experiences from which inspiration can be drawn. Their Hinterland home continues to provide them with a stunning backdrop for this approach.

Backhaus-Smith is one of Queensland’s most senior artists and his works portray the complexity and intrigue of the Australian bush, its history and its essence such as the erratic nature of watercourses or the migration of the emus. His lyrical works give great insight into the true composition of the outback which many otherwise perceive as a barren, unforgiving expanse. He’s also busy writing a new book about his work, to be launched in early 2009.

Judith Laws also knows and loves the bush through years of treks and camps, and whilst it has sparked her imagination for her art, broader travels through Morocco, South America, Russia and Europe have led her to passionate series of paintings full of even more colour, vibrance and celebration. Her paintings come from a need to share her deep feelings about a place or a moment.

These two exceptional artists will exhibit together again at ‘Art on Cairncross’, Cairncross Corner, Maleny from September 13. The variety of works will include captivatingly glorious canvasses and detailed watercolours journeying far and wide.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm and further details can be obtained from 5429 6404 or visit: www.artoncairncross.com.au
